Inscribed Bag of Hydra-Spawn

Inscribed Bag of Hydra-Spawn is one of the new healing trinkets which drop in the newest Mists of Pandaria (MOP) raid Throne of Thunder.  The trinket has the following stats in the order of LFR/Normal/Normal Thunderforged/Heroic/Heroic Thunderforged*:

  • Static spirit: 1218/1467/1552/1657/1728*
  • Absorb proc: 23262/28018/29630/31630/33260*
  • 1.13 RPPM (real procs per minute) (here’s an explanation of what this means)
  • 17 second ICD
  • Procs off direct or periodic healing spell

*All heroic thunderforged items have simulated stats.  Values are not officially available on Wowhead.

This just came out in the patch notes for March 12:

Protections for unlucky streaks have been added for trinkets that use the RPPM (real procs per minute) system.

  • Activation chance for trinket effects on a pull has been increased.
  • Every time the trinket fails to activate, there’s an increasing chance that it will activate.
  • Increased the activation chance for agility and strength trinkets from Throne of Thunder by 10%.
  • Increased the activation chance for intellect and spirit trinkets from Throne of Thunder by 5%.

I’m not sure what this exactly means.  Does it mean multiplying the RPPM value by 5% or 10%? Also, no idea what kind of increase in activation chance on pull means or what the second point means in values. These seem like well needed buffs to the trinket procs though.  Assuming these were patched before the raid last night lets take a look at some logs from a friend of mind who has the trinket.

Fight Length Absorb Overhealing % % Healing Procs
Jin’rokh the Breaker 233 140090 0.00% 1.10% 5
Horridon 564 224144 27.30% 2.00% 11
Council of Elders 408 196126 22.20% 1.70% 9
Tortos 355 252162 10.00% 1.90% 10
Megaera 418 280180 0.00% 1.30% 10
Ji-Kun 429 247437 32.10% 2.60% 13

If we look at this trinket in the way that it would be giving a 1-2.5% healing boost, we could determine whether replacing one of the other trinkets is worth it.  We also must keep in mind that it has static spirit which approximates to 687/828/876/935/975* Mp5.  Let us approximate the mana to healing ratio in terms of the one for Divine Light: 21600 Mana ~ 70,000 healing.  Let us also assume that most people (raid buffed) have close to 28,000 spell power at the heroic 5.1 gear level (~502) with maybe a few pieces of 522 gear.

The mana returned from the static spirit on the Bag is better than almost every other trinket except for the two versions of upgraded Heroic Spirits of the Sun.  For Relic and Spirits of the Sun, we are losing a static intellect value anywhere from 1021-1401 (3.6-5%) decrease.  This is not counting other things intellect impacts. For Qin-Xi, you will suffer a 1194-1639 intellect loss (4.3-6%).  Keep in mind this loss impacts overall healing.  Obviously for some trinkets, the difference is very apparent.  But lets take the common example of 2x upgrade Chi-Ji.  This trinket returns ~100 Mp5 less than the Bag. In a typical fight such as Ji-Kun this amounts to about a 10K loss in mana return alone which is equivalent to ~1 holy shock of 40K.  Add this on to the actual healing returned in the log above for this fight ~224K for a total of 264K more healing with the Bag. The trade off is if you use t he Bag you will be losing a static intellect of 1246 (4.5%) on overall healing.  This is slightly under the amount healed by the bag which will end up being under 3%.

What I can say about this trinket? At the normal level, the healing throughput from this trinket is barely better than Relic and most likely worse.  It’s not worth switching.  At the thunderforged and heroic level, I would seriously think about the increase as you are gaining 200 Mp5 over the trinket and your absorbs will hit for more.  How could they improve this trinket?  Make it proc more. Proccing 9 times in a 9.5 minute fight for 30K seems so miniscule.  Players don’t want static increases in healing as evidences by the dismay over the paladin 4 set.  They want things that will impact their game play or make it easier to do what they’re currently doing (give more mana back).  Adding a random healing proc which rarely occurs just feels like we’re losing out on mana return as we don’t feel the healing of the trinket.  Sure at some point it may save a life, but it’s random nature and low proc rate make this trinket at best a grudgingly accepted upgrade, at worst simply ignored.

(That being said, if you’re a restoration shaman you probable want this trinket in it’s normal form for it’s upgrade to mana tide totem.)
